Visits and Visitors

Visitors are always welcome to the Scottish Gliding Centre's Portmoak airfield. Many of our visitors are fellow glider pilots from other clubs perhaps in search of some ridge or wave flying. Some are interested potential members perhaps thinking of a trial flight or a holiday course. Often passing members of the public just pop in to perhaps watch the flying activities or have a snack or a meal in our restaurant. All are welcome.

If you are visiting as a glider pilot intending to fly with or without a glider of your own, please bring your log book and on arrival report to the office which is immediately on your left as you enter the clubhouse. If there is noone around please go straight on to the clubroom where you are likely to find someone serving from the kitchen. Failing all else, if flying is obviously taking place please make your own way to the launch point observing the usual precautions and introduce yourself to the duty instructor. If it is an east wind day and the launch-point is at the opposite end of the airfield you instead may with care make your way to the winch which will be at the nearer East end. The winch driver will be able to assist you or you will be able to get a lift to the launch-point in the cable towout truck. Please note that unless you have been given permission or are escorted you should not take your vehicle past the main car park onto the airfield. All visiting pilots are referred to the plan of the airfield for information.

If you are a member of the public please feel free to take advantage of our restaurant facilities in the main clubhouse from where you can also have a good view of the flying activities. Predominantly through the better months of the year the winds have a westerly component which means that launching will be from a point conveniently straight in front of the clubhouse windows. You may use the public car park which is on your right immediately beyond the clubhouse buildings. Please do not park on the access roads or grassed areas. Remember that Portmoak is an active airfield. For your own safety please do not proceed beyond the car park area without permission or an escort and do not allow children or animals to play on the grass areas. Gliders may use any part of the airfield at any time and they fly almost silently - you cannot hear them coming. Please note that use of the car park is at your own risk and that the Scottish Gliding Union does not accept any liability.

If you are interested in membership, a trial flight or holiday course please contact Irene, our front-of-house manager,  in the office which is immediately on your left as you enter the clubhouse. If the office is empty please enquire in the main clubroom or kitchen - any club member will be pleased to help you.
