An instructor briefs a cadet before an ASK-21 training
flight |
The Scottish Gliding Centre has a modern fleet of training
and club aircraft. The majority of 2 seat training is carried out in two
ASK-21 gliders by Alexander
Schleicher. These are popular training aircraft and are renowned for
their strength and build quality. We also own a dual-seat DG-505
from DG Flugzeugbau
which is used for advanced training including spinning. |

The principal solo machines are two SZD
Juniors which are widely recognised as
safe and easy-to-fly first-solo machines yet capable of excellent flying
performance. The Centrair Pegase is a
more advanced single-seater of competition standard. The SGC still
operates an ASK-8b (also by Alexander
Schleicher) single seater machine which is constructed of a tubular
steel frame with wood and fabric covering. Although 'not in its first
flush of youth' the K-8 is capable of outstanding climbing performance
and can generally be found at the top of the heap on marginal days. |

The Supacat winch |
Most launching at Portmoak is by means of the Supacat
winch which is usually enough to reach the hill lift
on one of the nearby ridges, but for days when winch launch height is insufficient or to
reach for that inaccessible bit of wave the Centre
operates a Pawnee tug aircraft. |
